How Are Acoustic Classes Determined?
The alpha value determines the acoustic class of a sound-absorbing material. The higher the alpha value
(ranging from 0 to 1) across the 250–4000 Hz frequency range, the higher the acoustic class.
A common misconception is that simply adding more Class A sound-absorbing materials will always improve acoustics. However, excessive absorption can ”kill” the sound, resulting in an unnaturally short reverberation time, which can also create an unpleasant acoustic environment. Therefore, finding the right balance
is essential.
