While the finishing touches of construction were being
applied at Rødovre Town Hall, another highly significant
Jacobsen municipal commission was beginning to be built
at Gentofte in the northern suburbs of Greater Copenhagen.
Upon completion, Munkegaard School attracted international praise for its humane design, each classroom taking
the form of a little brick pavilion with a slanted clerestory roof
for north-lighting and with its own adjacent courtyard garden in which in fine weather outdoor lessons could take
place and the children could play.
There too, Jacobsen specified Dæmpa panels for all of the
ceilings, it being particularly important to engender a calming atmosphere in the classrooms and connective spaces,
as well as in the school hall and refectory. Completed in
1957 and in constant use ever since, the school remains
much as Jacobsen designed it and in excellent condition.
