Probably following a visit by Fischer to Jacobsen’s office in
around 1952 – at which time the architect was designing a
new municipal headquarters for the Rødovre area of Greater
Copenhagen, which was among the earliest of his works in
the International Style – he chose Dæmpa panels for installation throughout its interiors. In the council chamber, large
wall panels of matching design were installed on either side
of the councillors’ desks. The building was inaugurated in
1956 and immediately attracted international attention and
praise on account of its highly refined and sophisticated
design and detailing, to which the panels in their usual quiet
way significantly contributed.
All of the building’s elements were utterly rectilinear, the long
facades of the exterior having curtain wall cladding comprising glass window and spandrel panels set within boldly
delineating aluminium framework. The end walls, meanwhile, were clad in blocks of Solvåg marble.
The internal finishes perpetuated this modular and gridded
visual language, the various wall claddings being either
wood-veneered plywood or painted gypsum sheets with
shadow-gaps between. The subtly perforated Dæmpa panels’ radiused edges picked up lateral illumination, forming a
further grid pattern that was universal throughout the interiors.
