A third even more prestigious commission meanwhile arose
in Det Fyenske Trælastkompagni’s home city of Odense,
where in 1937 the architect Bent Helweg-Møller had won
the competition to design a large extension for the City Hall
(Rådhus). His functionalist design was to be appended to
the existing Italianate main building which dated from early
1880s and the new addition would be finished in matching
red brick. Construction was underway when Denmark was
invaded and during the war the tower was partly demolished. Building work recommenced in the latter 1940s to an
updated design without a tower and the project was finally
completed in 1955. Dæmpa panels were installed throughout and many are still in situ today.
