Today, DAMPA pays considerable attention to the environmental impact of its products over their whole lifecycle –
including the production of steel and aluminium, which
traditionally have been carbon-intensive materials. As
Michael Nykjær observes, being a supplier to both the building construction and shipbuilding industries, DAMPA interfaces with sectors that have very different approaches to
matters of sustainability.
In building construction, there is a great focus on the environmental performance of materials and a general belief
that it is less harmful to use natural materials wherever possible than it is to use metals and concrete. In shipbuilding, by
contrast, steel and aluminium are the core substances used
in all construction with no obvious alternatives and so,
instead, the focus is upon low-carbon operation through the
use of bio-fuels, batteries and wind power. Shipbuilders and
owners view steel and aluminium as durable and recyclable
and therefore sustainable.

Nykjær and his colleagues have been pleased to find that
the major steelmakers can now supply steel made of 95
percent recycled scrap, produced using 100 per cent
renewable electricity, offering a reduction in carbon dioxide
emissions of as much as two-thirds. One manufacturer can
even produce so-called ‘green steel’ with 95 per cent lower
emission of carbon dioxide.
As Nykjær concludes, ‘at DAMPA we are very excited about
the green transformation of the steel manufacturing industry. And we are following the developments closely to ensure
that we can supply sustainable ceiling solutions made of
low-carbon steel to our customers.’
