During the COVID hiatus, DAMPA’s management were
forced to think laterally about alternatives to supplying ceilings for new construction of especially cruise ships where
travel had come to a stand-still and the future looked bleak.
The possibility of developing products for retrofitting acoustic solutions into existing spaces appeared to have considerable potential. There were a great many instances of
schools and workplaces in which the soundscapes would
benefit from optimisation through the addition of attractively-designed new elements.
Meanwhile, DAMPA’s chairman, Henrik Kaa Andersen,
believed that the company should place a greater emphasis
upon design and this became central to an emergent strategy of moving beyond the making of metal ceilings and
towards also providing complete acoustic design solutions,
including retrofittable elements.
Five years previously, DAMPA had developed an elegant
acoustic wall panel system made from perforated steel – but
this had not received much attention until the new strategy
was developed when it was realised that it would be ideal for
retrofitting within spaces of many kinds. Furthermore, the
subtly perforated panels could be printed with texts and
images, meaning that they could double as graphic and pictorial elements in the spaces in which they would be
installed.
In 2020, the system was re-launched as DAMPA® Silent
Board and an early customer was the Danish railway infrastructure company Banedanmark.
