Drejet’s successor as managing director was its previous
sales director, Ole Ewald, who continued to implement the
expansion and diversification plan. Ewald’s background
was in ship technology, his employment in DAMPA having
commenced in 1974 with subsequent promotion as head of
the Marine Division, where he succeeded Harry Schrøder
upon the latter’s retirement. After two years in another business, Ewald had returned to DAMPA in 1983 as sales director.
Under Ewald’s leadership, it was decided to produce solar
energy panels of the type developed by Jean Fischer and
demonstrated in his ‘Plus-Energy’ house. Solar energy
appeared to be another new sector with significant future
growth potential, but about which the company lacked production experience. Nonetheless, test panels were made
using supplied components and the first examples were
mounted on the roof of Munkebo School in Odense.
The initiative was ahead of its time but, alas, very few subsequent sales occurred.
