Some years later, in October 1989, Jens Nielsen attended
the World Railway Design Conference in Tokyo, after which
he visited Hokkaido to meet his counterpart at the Hokkaido
Railway Company. When Nielsen heard that it would be
building a station at New Chitose Airport, he proposed that
it should be designed using a concept that he would supply.
Completed in 1992, the station’s ceilings made very extensive use of the DCC system. Indeed, it was arguably the ultimate example of DSB’s Design Programme approach,
albeit located on the other side of the world – an island of
Danish modernist calm in an otherwise frenetic context.
